On July 3rd, 2004, something amazing happened in the small town of Tuba City on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona.

On that day, Glenn Danzig—former leader of horror-punk legends The Misfits, occult enthusiast and possessor of a black belt in Jeet Kun Do—was in town with his solo band for a show when he got into an argument backstage with Danny Marianino of the Phoenix-based punk band North Side Kings, who were there as his opening act.

The discussion did not end well for the muscular Danzig, who was KO'd with one quick punch from Marianino in an infamous incident that was captured on video.

Marianino's bandmate, Tom Reardon, shares his version of the tale:

…Danny simply reacted. The next thing I knew, I could see Glenn "Mother" Danzig, on his hands and knees looking 10 shades paler than usual with a little trickle of blood coming out of his mouth. He looked dazed as pandemonium ensued in the hallway that served as a backstage area…

Reardon says that he has retold the story countless times, including once to a laughing Jerry Only, Danzig's former Misfits bandmate and current opponent in a series of lawsuits over the band's trademark.

But the amazing story did not end well for the North Side Kings as Reardon says the incident "sucked a lot of the fun out of it" for Marianino, and the band broke up a few years later.

In a 2012 LA Weekly interview where he also says that he would have played Wolverine "less gay" than Hugh Jackman, Danzig claimed that he was set up by Marianino—whom he says was trying goad him into fighting on camera "so he could sue me or some shit."

When everyone was breaking it up, he coldcocked me. What are you going to do?

Danzig, who will be reuniting with his other legendary band Samhain at the Chicago edition of Riot Fest in September, said that Marianino's punch didn't hurt at all.

Reardon claims that to this day nobody he's talked to in the music industry about the incident has said they wish Danzig didn't get punched out.

UPDATE: I've reached out to Danzig via his Facebook page to get his side of the story. We'll update if we hear anything...
