Market Study Shows Colorado Smokes a Helluva Lot of Weed
While it's actually true that the vast majority of Colorado residents don't smoke marijuana, a new market demand study shows those Coloradoans who do get high like to get really damn high.
According to the report by the Colorado Department of Revenue's Marijuana Enforcement Division, residents and visitors in many miles high state will consume an estimated 130 metric tons of recreational and medical weed in 2014.
That's the equivalent to two M1 Abrams tanks, or one juvenile blue whale.
Consumption by state residents accounts for about 121.4 metric tons per year, the rest going to out-of-state visitors. Out-of-towners accounted for nearly 90 percent of the retail sales in mountain tourist towns like Breckenridge.
During the first four months of 2014, over $200 million worth of legal recreational and medical marijuana was sold in Colorado retail shops.
The study also reports that only about nine percent of the state's population routinely consumes legal weed on a monthly basis, with another four percent getting baked once or twice in the last year.
