Firefighters battling a fast-moving wildfire in western Montana made a miraculous rescue last week, saving a pair of adorable newborn mountain lions trapped under a burning log.

According to the Missoulian, the crews were working the 48-acre Three Mile fire near Florence in Bitterroot National Forest last Friday when they heard noises coming from underneath a burning log.

They were unable to get close enough to determine what it was, so they called in a helicopter to dump around 600 gallons of water on the log–drowning out the fire.

And out from underneath the smoldering log emerged two soaked, slightly blackened mountain lion cubs.

"They were only one to two weeks old, barely had their eyes open," Bitterroot National Forest spokesman Tod McKay told the Missoulian.

The cubs were scooped up and dried off by firefighters, who handed them off into the care of the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

If this tale hasn't already jerked some tears out of your ice-cold hearts by now, then get your hankies at the ready because it's unknown what happened to the helpless newborn cubs' mom, as crews didn't see any signs of other mountain lions in the area.
